Have you ever asked yourself “Does God really care whether or not I’m joyful?”. If you have, you’re not alone! In fact, most people have probably asked it at one point or another when life gets rough. So what is the answer?
First of all, what does joyful mean? Is it the same as happy? Some may use the terms synonymously, but I believe joy is much deeper, related with spiritual/eternal things. Joy is an attitude, not emotion. Happiness would be the temporal, excited emotion of something good happening, i.e. receiving a gift, or a fun get-together. Once the “thing” leaves, so do the associated emotions.
On the other hand, with joy being an attitude, we can choose our reaction to circumstances. For example, someone gets a great job. They are so happy! But then they lose that job. Are they still happy? Hard times and tragedy in life are inevitable. But there is always the choice to decide to be joyful anyway, trusting that God will work things out for the best. Actually, Christian history has proved that the greatest joys can result from the most painful experiences.
Joyfulness is of the Lord, not of ourselves. We should always choose to be joyful, but only through the Holy Spirit can we do this. Those who do not know Christ cannot experience true joy. Those who do know Christ and His joy refuse to exchange it for anything. To add, faked joy isn’t real joy at all. We can pretend we’re joyful, pretend we’re trusting for the best, but deep inside we know it’s just hypocrisy. No, true joy is pure, effortless joy!
So why is it so important that we rejoice? The answer is simple; our rejoicing brings glory to Christ! And isn’t that our main purpose as Christians? “Man’s chief end is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever.” When we are sad, discouraged, complaining etc, that doesn’t bring glory to God. It says “look at me, God isn’t taking care of me like He should”. We want to honor Christ, not dishonor Him.
Do I claim to “rejoice evermore”? Nay, far from it. I’m still but a mere baby in Christ, I’m only beginning to learn. There are plenty of times I feel like it’s not even possible to rejoice during such a trying time. But I know His Word is true, and by His grace I will continue to grow in this God-given joy!
As always, please don’t just take my word for these ideas…or dismiss my words as impossible. Look at the Scriptures to find out for yourself! Below I’ve listed merely a few of the numerous verses found on the subject, from the Old and New Testament. I pray you will be encouraged and blessed by them!

17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

1 John 4:16-18 “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Hebrews 13:6 “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Psalm 37 “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity…….”
Joshua 1:9 “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Psalm 56:2-3 “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

1 Timothy 5:14 “I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion for the adversary to speak reproachfully.”
Titus 2:3-5 “The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient, to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Proverbs 12:4“A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”
Proverb’s 31:10-12 “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
Proverb’s 31:26-31 “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
Proverbs 31:13-25 “She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”
Ephesians 5:22-24“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.”
Ephesians 5:33 “Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”
1 Peter 3:1“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;”
Have you ever seen these statements? Who hasn’t? “Get rich quick” schemes such as gambling or lottery where you “pay a little to *hopefully* get a lot” are everywhere we look, trying to catch our attention. Being made in the image of God, we naturally desire to be like him. To be unlimited, free and in control. And as money seems to be the key to this, it can be easy to fall in the trap of lusting after “millions”. But do these schemes work? What does the Bible say about them? And are there other ways to obtain what we really need? Take a look at the answers given by our Lord!
Proverbs 23:5 “Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.”
Proverbs 28:22 “He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.”Proverbs 13:11 ” Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.”Proverbs 28:20 “A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.”Ecclesiastes 5:10 “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity”Proverbs 10:22 “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.”
Luke 12:21 “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Hebrews 13:5-6 ” Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
1 Timothy 6:9-10 “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
Words of The Wise to Ponder….
James 1:22-25 ” But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
James 2:14 “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?”
James 17-26 “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
ALL of mankind suffer, including true believers. Yes, even Christ suffered, perfect though he absolutely was. We are to look to Christ for strength and comfort. During times of suffering the followers of Jesus have a promise of everlasting glory to look forward to. Suffering should bring us closer to the Lord, building our faith in him. It enables us to help others in their trials, as we have been through similar testings. Read through these verses to see the promises and truth for yourself!
2 Timothy 3:12 “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
James 1:3 “ Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”
2 Corinthians 1:5-7“For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.”
Colossians 1:11&24 “Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church”
1 Timothy 1:16 “Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”
1 Peter 1:11“Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.”
1 Peter 2:19-21 “ For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
1 Peter 4:13 “But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.”
Philippians 3:8“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ”
Romans 8:18“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Psalm 30:5“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
Galatians 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.”
Revelation 21:4&7 “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.”
“I cannot work my soul to save
For that my Lord has done
But I can work like any slave
For love of God’s Dear Son.”
Words of the wise to ponder….
Ecclesiastes 7:12&19“For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, but the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it. Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten rulers of the city.”
Ecclesiastes 9: 16-19 “Then I said: “wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard rather than the shout of a ruler of fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroys much good.”
